ANAL IRRITATION

ADVICE FOR PATIENTS WHO SUFFER FROM IRRITATION OF THE ANAL AREA

Irritation & itching are often due to excessive moisture in this area.

Keep your anal area clean & dry. If possible bathe the area once or twice daily, e.g. after a bowel action or before retiring to bed, in lukewarm water to which Savlon or a small amount of salt has been added. Dry thoroughly by gently wiping the area & if possible by the use of a hairdryer on the cool setting. Only after it has been dried thoroughly, you can, if you wish, dust the area with a small amount of Johnson’s baby powder.

After a bowel action clean your bottom gently with soft tissue paper or cotton wool. Dab rather than rub.

Avoid using applications of any kind (e.g. creams or ointments) to the anal area or the use of suppositories. Your skin can in time become sensitive to these.
