INFORMATION & ADVICE FOR PATIENTS WAITING TO HAVE SURGERY FOR THEIR “INFECTED” NATAL AREA PILONDAL SINUS

In this condition there are dimples in the natal cleft, within are embedded tufts of hairs. The presence of hair predisposes these dimples to infection. The only permanent way to cure this condition is by surgery; even then (although rare) the trouble sometimes returns & needs further surgery.

To minimise the risk of infection (or re-infection) while waiting for a suitable or convenient time to have surgery please carry out the following instructions as far as is possible for you.

Keep your natal area as hairless as possible. Gently shave or use a “low-allergenic” hair removing cream to remove the hair. Some parts may not be accessible for shaving & can only be cleared with the cream.

Keep the area as clean & dry as possible. Bathe it once a day (or twice if possible) in warm water to which has been added a little salt or Savlon. Dry the area thoroughly by gently wiping and, if at all possible the use of a hair dryer on the cool setting.

Take measures to minimise sweating of that area. Avoid underwear & garments such as those made from Nylon, which do not allow the skin to “breathe” & therefor cause excessive sweating & moisture. Cotton garments are ideal.

If you think the area is getting inflamed, i.e. a painful reddened hot swelling appears, consult your doctor as soon as possible, as antibiotics given at an early stage can sometimes stop the infection from progressing into forming an abcess (large boil).
